New York Knicks - Atlanta Hawks, 23/05/2021 game preview

The 2020/2021 NBA season is coming to its climax with the playoffs starting next week. There are many exciting and tough series ahead, but perhaps one of the toughest and most unpredictable will be between the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks. We'll take a look at both teams and make our predictions, so stay tuned.
Julius Randle Knicks

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks (41-31) finished the regular season in 4th place in the Eastern Conference standings, just ahead of the Atlanta Hawks in 5th place. The Knicks' summer work was underestimated before the season and NBA analysts often joked that the organisation was completely hopeless. However, those same analysts quickly began to change their minds after the Knicks had an impressive start to the season, picking up one win after another and even earning Julius Randle a place among the MVP candidates.

Interestingly, just looking at the team's roster, it's not that surprising that this team could finish 4th in the conference and overtake teams like the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, etc., but the results speak for themselves. Julius Randle, who has become one of the most improved players in the league and a true leader of the Knicks, talked about how much he has learned from his years with the Lakers under Bryant and is trying to instil a championship culture in the Knicks. This is of course helped by the ambiguous Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. You can like him and you can dislike him, but the fact is that he is doing a great job, and even though he has not had any serious achievements since leaving the Bulls, Thibodeau is showing his class with the Knicks.

It's hard to predict what we can expect from this team in the playoffs, as they are quite young and have no great achievements, but so are the Atlanta Hawks, so the playing field is very even. The Knicks may have to wait for years to reach the Eastern Conference semi-finals, so they need to seize the opportunity now.

Trae Young Hawks

Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks (41-31) finished the NBA regular season in 5th place in the standings and came very close to having home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. This could be of great importance in this series, as the New York Knicks have won all 3 of their games against the Hawks this season, and 2 of those games were at home. Of course, this is just the regular season and the playoffs are a different story, but a general picture can be drawn based on the preliminary results.

The Atlanta Hawks have a competitive roster this season, with the addition of Bogdan Bogdanovic and Clint Capela to the ever-improving Trae Young and John Collins, further strengthening this young and talented team. Capela is one of the best defensive big men, who also has a good pick'n'roll game and a good rebounding game, while Collins, who plays PF, has a good shot and can spread the floor.

Although the Hawks had a choppy season, with ups and downs, the team finished the regular season strong with 4 consecutive wins and a winning rhythm going into the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how this team will be able to extend its winning streak in the playoffs.

Forecast

This series is likely to be one of the toughest, and it would not be surprising if it requires all 7 possible games. The Knicks' home court advantage could play a decisive role in this series, as New York plays better at home than on the road, and any home court advantage is a big plus for young teams at this stage.
