Dixit game

The game Dixit is a colorful, imagination-liberating leisure activity where one picture becomes more eloquent than a thousand words. The illustrations are created by the talented artist Marie Cardouat, making each game card a separate work of art. The game was introduced in 2008 in France and has won several best game titles in just a few years (awarded and nominated 30 times!). Today, there are already 10 different editions of the game, surprising with their artistic, enchanting, yet slightly strategic gameplay that requires knowing your fellow players.

Board game Dixit – preparation

Each player chooses one rabbit and places it on the starting space of the game board (the space with a score of 0). The dealer shuffles the 84 game cards and deals 6 to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in a pile accessible to everyone.

  • If 4 players are playing, each takes 4 voting cards (from 1 to 4).
  • If 5 players are playing, each takes 5 voting cards (from 1 to 5).
  • If 6 players are playing, each takes 6 voting cards (from 1 to 6).

Note! Do not show your cards to anyone!

The Narrator

One of the players is the narrator. He looks at the 6 cards in his hand. He creates and says a sentence about one of them out loud (but does not show his card!).

The sentence can be of any form – composed of one word or several, it can be just a sound or even a depicted movement. Moreover, sentences illustrating the picture can be created or based on works of art (a song or poem, movie, proverb, etc.). Thus, the board game Dixit requires a lot of creativity!

Additionally, it is interesting that the game's narrator becomes the one who first thinks of a sentence after looking at the card.

Choosing a card for the narrator

Each player selects one of their cards that best fits the narrator's sentence. Then the players hand these cards to the narrator in such a way that other players do not see them. The narrator shuffles his card with the received cards. Then he randomly lays them face up on the table. The card on the left is the first, the one next to it is the second, and so on.

Finding the narrator's card: voting

The players' goal is to find the narrator's card among all the face-up cards. Each player secretly votes for the card they think is the narrator's.

Players place a face-down voting card with the number of the card they are voting for in front of them. When all players have placed their voting cards, they are turned over and placed next to the corresponding cards.

Note! You cannot vote for your own card.

Dixit game – scoring

  • If all players recognize the narrator's card, or if none of them find it, the narrator does not score points, and all other players receive 2 points each.
  • In any case, the narrator and the players who guessed the narrator's card receive 3 points each.
  • Each player, except the narrator, receives 1 point for each voting card placed next to their card.

Players move their rabbits on the game board by as many spaces as they have earned points. The winner is the player who first scores 30 points. In other rules, the winner is the one who has the most points after the last card is played.

End of the turn dixit-rules

Each player replenishes their hand to 6 cards. In the next turn, the narrator is the player to the left of the current narrator (the game continues clockwise).

End of the game

The game ends when the last card is drawn. The player with the most points wins.

Example of a turn:

5 players sit around the table: Tomas, Laura, Marija, Mindaugas, Inga.

Tomas is the first to think of a sentence about one of his cards. So, he starts the turn as the narrator. The sentence he says to everyone, for example, is: “7 colors”.

The other players, after hearing the sentence, have to choose a card that best matches Tomas's sentence.

Laura also has 6 cards in her hand and chooses the one from her cards that she thinks is closest to Tomas's sentence. Laura hands her card to the narrator of this turn, Tomas, who shuffles his card with the cards received from other players and lays them out on the table.

Each player (except the narrator) votes for the card they think is Tomas's. When everyone places their voting card, they are turned over.

For example, only Laura recognized Tom's card, so she and Tom each earn 3 points. Two players voted for Laura's card, so she earns 2 additional points. Maria also earns one point because one of the players voted for her card.

Thus, at the end of this turn, Laura earns 5 points, Tom 3 points, and Maria 1 point. Mindaugas and Inga do not earn any points because no one recognized Tom's card and no one voted for their cards.

Tips

If the storyteller describes the card too precisely, all players will guess it, and the storyteller will not earn any points.

On the other hand, if the sentence is too loosely related to the card, there is a high chance that no one will guess the card, and the storyteller will not earn any points.

Thus, the storyteller's challenge is to come up with a sentence that is neither too descriptive nor too abstract, so that some of the players guess it, but not all. It may be difficult at first, but you will see that inspiration comes more easily after a few turns.

Dixit Board Game – New Variants Every Year

There are quite a few variants and different editions of the Dixit game, which prevent players from getting bored.

For example, there are versions where only 3 players play. Each player has 7 cards instead of 6. Each player, except the storyteller, gives 2 cards instead of one. So, when the cards are revealed, the storyteller's card needs to be chosen from 5 possible ones.

Scoring. When only one player guesses the storyteller's card, they both get 4 points instead of 3.

Pantomime and Singing. In this variant, the storyteller has the option to sing a song or melody that is somehow related to the card, or to act it out in pantomime. The other game rules remain the same.

Finally, you can mix various variants or even create your own.

Developing Creativity with Dixit

Dixit is an excellent tool for developing and encouraging creativity. In the game, each player becomes a storyteller who has to create a short story, phrase, or sound that describes the chosen card. This encourages creative thinking and the search for unexpected associations.

During the game, players learn to solve problems by choosing the card that best matches the storyteller's phrase. This constantly generates new ideas and promotes flexibility. The colorful and symbolic cards help expand the boundaries of imagination and develop creative thinking.

Dixit also encourages communication and collaboration, as players share stories and interpretations. This develops social skills and improves understanding among players. Each game is unique, so Dixit never gets boring and constantly presents new creative challenges.

The Dixit board game develops not only imagination but also logical and creative thinking – the associations that arise with the picture in each new game surprise even the oldest veterans of this game!
