Portugal - France, Euro 2020 preview and prediction

In Group F, the 'killer group' of UEFA Euro 2020, France and Portugal will face off for first place and guaranteed qualification to the next round. France is still leading the group with 4 points after a draw against Hungary, while Portugal is in 3rd place with 3 points after a heartbreaking defeat against Germany. We will take a look at both teams and, as usual, share our predictions for the match.
Portugal

Portugal

Portugal kicked off Euro 2020 with a 3-0 win over Hungary. Although the score was still 0-0 until the 84th minute, the Hungarian team completely lost their cool after the first goal and the Portuguese scored 2 more goals to finish the match with a thumping result. Interestingly, the Portuguese had several good chances to score in the first half, but maybe because of the tension in the first game, or maybe because of a bad day, they didn't take advantage of them, even though it was a one-goal game for most of the match.

The Portuguese national team's match against Germany was a different story, with the first goal of the match coming in the 15th minute, scored by Cristiano Ronaldo after a pass from D. Jota. However, after this goal, the German team took full control of the match and managed to score 2 goals and take the lead before the break. Although both of Germany's first two goals were written off in the match report as Portuguese own goals, if you look at the situations from which the Germans would have struck, those goals would have been scored anyway. The German team simply dominated in attack and the Portuguese defence had absolutely no remedy.

In order to win against France, Portugal will first need to find ways to plug the defensive gaps that were an eye-opener against Germany. The Portuguese attack is not in question - it is capable of scoring goals and creating chances, but scoring against France will not be enough if the defence is again leaky and concedes several goals.

France

France

With 4 points, the French team has already secured its place in the next round, but it will definitely be looking to win against one of its principal opponents and advance to the next round as group winners. There is an ambiguous feeling about the French team: on the one hand, the team is playing well, but failing to take their chances, but on the other hand, the French are not playing at all like what football analysts and the team's fans were expecting from them.

In the match against Germany, the French stopped playing after an early goal and closed down their defence, even though the goal was scored quite early - in the 20th minute. This would have been a logical decision in the middle of the second period, but not in the first. The Germans had a number of good chances to equalise the score and if they had taken at least one of them, we would be talking about the importance of this match from a different perspective.

The French conceded the first goal against Hungary, giving the impression that they had come to the first half to jog rather than play football. It is difficult to say whether there are some problems within the team or whether the players are not determined to do their best in the group stage, but it is clear that the French team's performance, at least at this stage, is very difficult to predict, and it is not clear what we can expect from this team.

Predicted team line-ups:

Portugal:
Patricio, Semedo, Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro, Pereira, Sanches, Fernandes, B.Silva, Ronaldo, Jota;

France:
Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Hernandez, Kante, Pogba, Tolisso, Griezmann; Mbappe, Benzema.

Forecast

The Portuguese team has shown a good attacking record in the first rounds of the tournament, averaging 2.5 goals per game. The French, meanwhile, have scored just 2 goals and conceded just 1. Portugal's hurricane-like attack is likely to be able to break through Lloris's defence, but it is unlikely to be enough for victory. The French have one of the strongest attacking lines in the tournament and the Portuguese defence is very questionable, so it is likely that we will see the French score more than one goal.
