A traditional Mahjong card set includes:

  • 4 seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Spring) cards, which are numbered from 1 to 4. These cards give extra points in Mahjong. That is, if you manage to draw them. Interestingly, to play the traditional game, you need to have at least some familiarity with Chinese hieroglyphics, as not knowing them can make the game very, very confusing.
  • 4 colourful flower cardsThese cards show orchids, plum blossoms, bamboo, chrysanthemums - traditional Chinese flowers and plants. The images of flowers may vary from place to place. They are used selectively and can be played with or without them. If they are used in the game, they can give extra points if successfully arranged.
  • 12 dragon cards - 4 Green Dragon cards with a green dragon in front; 4 Red Dragon cards with a red dragon; 4 White Dragon cards, which are usually blank. In some places there are also cards with the letter "P", which represent purity and innocence.
  • 16 wind cards - 4 cards for each type of wind - easterly, westerly, northerly and southerly.
  • 36 circular cards showing numbers 1 to 9. Each number has 4 identical cards.
  • 36 cards with Chinese hieroglyphics on themwhich also stand for the numbers 1 to 9. Each hieroglyph has 4 identical cards.
  • 36 cards featuring bamboo. There are 4 sets of 9 cards in total. The illustration on all these cards shows the number of bamboos. Only the first card is slightly different, as it usually shows a bird, but no bamboo image at all. Cards 1, 5, 7 and 9 show both types of bamboo, green and red. The other cards show only the green bamboo.

Players first arrange all the face-up tables according to certain templates and then try to arrange sets of cards - sets.

The 3 main sets of cards are:

  • A "Pung" is a set of 3 identical cards with a symbol: e.g. 3 x green dragons.
  • 3 identical number cards, e.g. 3 x 2 numbers.
  • "Kong - a set of 4 identical cards, e.g. 4 x number 7 bamboo.

The basic idea of the game is to collect enough cards to shout "Mahjong" and leave the game. Later, in other parts of the world, the rules of the game became very simple - players would find two identical boards, turn them over and put them aside. Initially, the game was played by four players, then, as the game moved online, it became possible to play with two players, and now it is possible to play with one! Mahjong game rules

The basic idea is to collect enough cards to shout "Mahjong" and leave the game.

1. Getting ready

Sets of cards

Mahjong players first place all the tables face-up according to a set of templates and then try to build sets of cards - sets. The 4 main sets of cards are:

  1. A "Pung" is a set of 3 identical cards with a symbol: e.g: 3 x green dragons or 3 identical number cards, e.g. 3 x 2 numbers.
  2. "Kong - a set of 4 identical cards, e.g. 4 x number 7 bamboo.
  3. "Chow - 3 cards with consecutive numbers, e.g. 2, 3, 4 or 4, 5, 6.
  4. "Eye - set of 2 identical cards.

When one of these sets is collected, Mahjong is announced.

Seating

First, place one wind direction card on the table. Each player then draws one card and sits in a counterclockwise sequence - north, west, south and east. The player sitting in the last position starts the game. The seating position changes clockwise after each player wins. Thereafter, the main seating position becomes South, then West and finally North.

mahjong rules

 Erection of walls

The lead player in the East position shuffles the cards and deals 36 cards to each player. In other games, all players shuffle the cards and randomly deal the required number of cards. Thus, when each player receives the cards, they line them up in a row, two cards face down on top of each other. The cards are then arranged in 18 columns. The order of the cards is also not simple - all the cards are placed from left to right in front of each player. This way, a regular square of cards (4 players - 4 walls) is arranged, representing the Great Wall of China.

Wall demolition

Again, the main player in the East decides which player will start breaking down the wall by rolling the dice. There are variations with 3 or 4 dice, but in this case it is played with 2 dice. For example, if the numbers 1+2 are rolled (3 in total), the count starts with the roller (who will be 1), then counter-clockwise, the player to his right will be 2 and the player to his right will be 3. Then the player to his right rolls the dice again and adds them up, e.g. 3+6 for a total of 9. Then it is not the players that are counted, but the cards in his wall that are counted clockwise from right to left. The two cards that are stopped on are removed from the game. The top card removed is placed on top of the top pair of cards in front of it, and the bottom card is placed on top of the next pair of cards in two anticlockwise turns. All players shall do this.

Dealing of cards

Once the wall is down, the cards are dealt. The dice are rolled again by the host. The number of dice he rolls, for example, is 12. He then takes his twelfth pair of cards for himself. The next player counts up to 12 again until he finds himself on another pair of cards, which he takes for himself again. This goes round and round until each player has 12 cards in his hand. The person in the eastern position takes one extra pair of cards and deals one extra card to the other players of their choice. This leaves the East player with 14 cards and all other players with 13 cards. The cards are dealt in different ways in different regions.

2. Game

The player in the East position starts the game again. He takes one card from his wall and places it face up in the middle of the wall square. This player also chooses another redundant card in his hand and places it in the middle of the square as well. This is where the real game of Mahjong begins.

  • If at least one player has two or three cards that are identical to the cards on the table, he or she can start by playing special sets of Mahjong cards. He can pick up a card from the table and, depending on the combinations, shout "Pung", "Kong" or "Chow". He turns these cards face up on the table. If unexpectedly he is able to make a Mahjong with his cards, he shall show all the winning cards and end the game.
  • When Kong is dealt, the player shows all successful cards on the table and immediately takes one card from his hand.
  • Interestingly, Pung can be turned into Kong at any time, but only if the player pulls the right card from his/her wall.
  • Important! All cards that have already been discarded in the middle of the walls and do not form any combination are worthless, except for the last card discarded. This means that only with this card can the player continue to make successful combinations.
  • Each player can make successful combinations with the other player's combinations.
  • If a player does not have a Pung, Kong or any other winning combination, the player to his right starts the turn.

3. End

  • If all the cards in a player's border are drawn, a tie is declared and no player receives points. All Mahjong cards are shuffled and the game is restarted by the same player as at the start.
  • When a player is only one card short of a winning Mahjong, he may (but is not obliged to) announce to the other players that he has only one card left, thus alerting the other players to take a little more time to act accordingly.
  • The player who draws a winning card and can make a Mahjong with it - turns over all his cards and calls out the name of the game.
  • It also happens that two players face off in an unequal battle - one has a card with which to make a Pung or a Kong, and the other has a card with which to complete the Mahjong. The player with the better Mahjong combination, however, has the advantage.
  • It is also possible for two players to have successful cards with which to complete a Mahjong at the same time, when a favourable card has just been discarded on the table, in which case the player closer to the player (counting from the right) who discarded the favourable card wins the dispute.

Mahjong is only won if at least one of the following sequences is successful:

1 sect. 4 Pung and East Wind Eye. "Clean Hand - a highly successful Mahjong is a sequence that is scored using only bamboo numbers.

1 chop

2 sections. A particularly valuable sequence, the Pure Hand, is considered to be one that is made up entirely of circles. It consists of "Pungs", "Chongs" and "Eye".

2 cuts

Later, in other parts of the world, the rules of the game became very simple - players would find two identical tables, turn them over and put them aside.
