Thailand officially recognises poker as a sport

Thailand has taken the unexpected but significant step of officially recognising poker as a sport.

The decision was made by the country's Sports Authority of Thailand (the "Sports Authority") after a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit.

Although gambling is severely restricted in Thailand, the decision marks an important change, as poker will now be seen as a strategic and skill-based activity rather than a game of chance.

Poker tournaments receive state support

This decision opens the door for official poker tournaments in Thailand. In August, the country will host the WPT Prime Thailand, the first international poker event sponsored byThailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The tournament is expected to attract foreign players, boost sports tourism and generate economic benefits domestically.

The Thai authorities signed a cooperation agreement with the World Poker Tour earlier this spring. The aim of the agreement is to ensure the smooth organisation of the tournaments and to lay the foundations for a long-term cooperation.

Restrictions still in place

Although poker is officially recognised as a sport, there are still strict restrictions in Thailand. Only the state lottery and horse racing can operate legally in the country. Even card games are restricted, with no more than 120 individual cards per person unless they are officially registered with the Thai Customs Department (“Excise Department”).

In the past, the possibility of opening resorts in Thailand with entertainment, accommodation and casino areas was considered, but this plan was put on hold due to political instability and public uncertainty.

What does this mean for Thai sport and tourism?

The recognition of poker as a sport could open up new opportunities for Thai sport and tourism. The official status will allow for more events, more international cooperation and a change in the public's perception of the game. However, until the general restrictions are changed, everything is likely to be limited to sports-related poker.
