 Carriage Card Game - Rules

Number of players

"Carriage" can be played by two, three or four players.

 Instruments needed for the game

The card game Carriage is played with a traditional deck of cards. A total of 24 cards are chosen, especially when playing with more players. The cards are ranked as follows: nine, ten, jack, queen, king, ace. Cards must be dealt equally to all players. In addition, each player must have one special card, known as a trump card, chosen from drums, wines, hearts, or clubs, before starting to play 'Chariot'.

How to choose trumps? For a player holding the Queen of Clubs, the trump card is the Queen of Clubs. The other trumps are awarded clockwise. Thus, the second player's trumps are wines, the third player's trumps are hearts and the fourth player's trumps are drums. The trumps are chosen by the players during the first game and remain the same until the end of the game.

If the game is played with 4 players, the player with the queen of clubs starts the game. If there are 3 or 2 players, the player holding the nine of diamonds shall start the game.

If there are fewer than four players, unselected trumps are treated as regular cards.

The aim of the game

Get all your cards out as soon as possible, so you're not left with a handful of cards yourself. The game also has some interesting "penalties" - the jack of wines is nicknamed "the cock" and crossing this card is considered a kind of humiliation. Also, when there are two players left in the game and one of them has a nine, this card can be used to make the last pick and thus become the "best" player.

The Carriage Card Game

 Game progress

At the start of a new game, the player to the right of the dealer moves his cards. Cards are dealt clockwise, up to a maximum of three cards from the deck per player - preferably one card per player until all cards have been dealt.

Once the cards have been dealt, the first step of the game is for all players with nines to discard them on the table and swap them. The player who chose clubs as his trump card takes the nine of clubs, the player who chose hearts as his trump card takes the nine of hearts, and so on. This action is important to ensure that each player has the smallest trump of his type.

The game proceeds clockwise. The turn belongs to the player to the left of the dealer. The latter may discard any card he wishes, for example a ten of wine. The next player must counter by discarding a higher ranked card of the same type, in this case a jack, queen, king or ace. If a player does not have any higher ranked wine cards, he may discard any of his trumps. A trump may also be a card of the same or lower rank, in this case a nine, ten, jack, queen, king and ace, which will cut off the second player's discarded ten of wine. Another situation is when you are dealt a trump of your type. In this case, only a higher ranked trump, such as a jack, queen, king or ace, can counter. If you are successful, you must place another card on the table for the next player to your left. Again, you may discard any card you wish.

card games and bonding

If you happen to have none of your trumps, or a higher ranked card that was discarded by a player who has already made a move, you must take all the cards that were discarded on the table. In this case, you lose the right to discard one more card and the player to your left takes the turn and discards the card.

  One more important rule

Another important rule that should not be forgotten or omitted. If the card you are dealt matches the trump of your neighbour on the left (which you can tell by the type of nine he received at the start), you can counter with any trump of your own type - nine, ten, jack, queen, king or ace. For example, if your neighbour throws you a nine of clubs, and you have a ten of clubs or higher, you cannot throw it, because the trump card of your neighbour on the left is clubs. If you don't have a trump of your own, you must again take all the cards from the table into your own pile. In addition, if you happen to take all your trumps, your trumps that are left with the players become free cards, and the other players can ignore the latter rule (that you have to take the players' trumps into account if you don't want to take all your cards home).

  Who won?

Interestingly, this in a card game there is no one winner - there is only one loser. As mentioned above, the winners of the game are the first players to draw all their cards, and the loser is the first player to draw the largest deck of cards. There can be no "tails" - the last player, although holding the higher ranking card, cannot counter. Usually the game does not end with a single game - the loser tries to get even and pass on the "card cart" to the next player. Usually he or she deals the cards for a new game.

playing a card game

Logical thinking and strategic moves are crucial in this game - if a player throws his cards without thinking through his next moves, he could very quickly end up a loser and the game will last only a few minutes. It is important to strategise in order to make sure that your opponent takes as many cards as possible, so remember to keep track of not only your own cards, but also those of your friends - ask for trumps, don't remind your friends of other players' trumps, and have fun!
