Poker in today's reality is not what it used to be. Or at least not as it is portrayed in the movies.
A computer, an extra monitor, and hours spent at home or anywhere else are the daily routine of today. In reality, poker is played much less frequently, but in the past, it was impossible to play it any other way.
So PokerioMokykla.com offers you a break and a look at a slightly idealized face of poker, associated with high society and criminals. Serious gentlemen, smoking cigars and drinking whiskey at the tables, with a gun tucked in their waistband.
“PokerioMokykla.com” presents you with a list of recommended movies to watch, which are in one way or another related to poker, betting, or casinos.
We present to you the sixth part of poker-related movie suggestions.
Bet Raise Fold (2013)
IMDb rating: 7.6
For modern poker players, this is perhaps the most relevant documentary film, which tells the story of online poker. Although it focuses on the United States market, every player should find it interesting how quickly online poker emerged, changing people's lives and helping some of them get rich.
The film also mentions “Black Friday,” which is well known to those who watched our recommended film “All In – The Poker Movie.” “Bet Raise Fold” discusses the rapid rise of poker and the unexpected move by the US government that led to the collapse of online poker in the country.
The main characters of the film are three ordinary people whose financial well-being has been significantly contributed to by poker. It shows that you can earn money from it, whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a world traveler.
A great film worth watching for everyone. Especially considering the current context in Lithuania, where foreign gambling rooms are blocked, and you have to use bypass measures.
Deal (2008)
IMDb rating: 5.4
A light entertainment film in which we can all (or at least many of us) imagine ourselves in the hero's shoes. A young student plays poker well, and his talent is noticed by a famous gambler from the past, who had quit poker due to a previous promise. However, this does not prevent him from passing on his knowledge to the young man, who sweeps his opponents one by one at the poker tables.
However, as is typical for such entertainment cinema, everything revolves around a somewhat shady deal and relationships with women. Don't be fooled by the low rating of this film – you won't gain immense life wisdom from such a movie, but you'll have a good time and imagine yourself in the hero's place – in top-level competitions with a stunning girl by your side.
The Sting (1973)
IMDb rating: 8.3
According to IMDb ratings, “The Sting” is ranked 91st among all the highest-rated films. This is truly a remarkable rating, allowing this masterpiece to be called a classic of cinema.
The film's action takes viewers to 1936 Chicago, where one con artist teams up with another to win a huge sum of money from a criminal. However, it's not just about the money, but also personal vendettas – as the latter character is responsible for the murder of the two con artists' mutual friend.
Gambling, money, guns, and women. This classic film has it all, and the plot is full of twists that keep the viewer's attention.
The Gambler (1974)
IMDb rating: 7.3
A film over 40 years old about a literature professor who has gambled away his money and keeps borrowing from those closest to him – his girlfriend, his mother, and eventually those who start to pursue him. Despite all this, the desire to gamble does not go away.
This is an existential drama that will make everyone think. No wonder this film is highly rated. However, for those who have more time, it would be better to read Fyodor Dostoevsky's book “The Gambler.” This film is an adaptation of F. Dostoevsky's book.
Casino (1995)
IMDb rating: 8.2
Where there is a lot of money, there are also deceptions, greed, and power. In addition to all this, there is also murder and a fight between two best friends – a mafia boss and a casino owner.
As usual, a woman gets involved in their friendship, and the fight begins.
This is a film that will not disappoint any viewer about power, money, and relationships. No wonder “Casino” ranks 147th in the IMDb movie ratings.
