Relax: poker movies for a quiet evening (Part II)

Poker today is not the reality it used to be. Well, or at least the way the cinema presents it.

A computer, an extra monitor and hours spent at home or anywhere else are the order of the day. Poker is played much less frequently in real life, but in the past it was not even possible to play it otherwise.

So PokerioMokykla.com offers you a break and a glimpse into the somewhat idealised, high-society and crime-ridden face of poker. Serious uncles at the tables, pulling cigars and drinking whiskey and holding a gun.

Here is the second part of our poker-related film offers.

Part I

High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story (2003)

IMDb rating: 6.2.

A film based on a true story that will leave no one indifferent. This is the story of Stu "The Kid" Ungar. Stu Ungar is a poker legend from 1953-1998. He is one of only two poker players to have won the WSOP Main Event 3 times.

A highly aggressive game of bluffing, winning, love and drugs. The poker (and blackjack) player nicknamed "The Kid" had nothing missing in his life, and that is exactly what this film shows.

Each viewer either likes it exclusively or doesn't like it at all - with no middle ground. However, every poker player should get to know Stu Ungar's biography, because there is a reason why he is considered one of the most talented players.

All In - The Poker Movie (2012)

IMDb rating: 6.7.

"Poker players are the last cowboys in America", "I've never seen people taking autographs from gamblers". These and similar catchphrases are heard in this film about the collapse of online poker in the US due to changes in the law.

When the US Department of Justice shut down three of the most popular poker rooms, there was a lot of confusion. Poker's livelihood was in trouble and the entire US gaming community seemed about to collapse.

However, this documentary gives a first-hand account of the American poker kitchen and explains why poker is a way for many to pursue the American dream.

Regalo di Natale (1986) / Rivincita di Natale (2004)

IMDb rating: 7.7 / 6.8.

18 years after a painful defeat, Franco, an industrialist and film producer, meets a group of old friends for Christmas. Although many years have passed, the previous defeat has not been forgotten, so a rematch takes place.

During the game, he realises the loss of an important and long-lasting friendship. At the poker table, old hatreds and disagreements are brought to the surface, giving the game itself a new meaning.

These are two Italian films, one known as "Christmas Present" and the other as "Christmas Rematch". Both are complementary and certainly deserve attention, especially during this festive period.

21 (2008)

IMDb rating: 6.8

A well-known film based on true facts and known to many film buffs, about six maths students who were trained by card-counting experts to win millions in Las Vegas gambling houses.

It's not about poker, it's about casinos and blackjack. It's also about money and card counting, which is a subject close to every poker player's heart.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

IMDb rating: 8.2

A true classic of cinema, one of the 200 greatest films of all time. Few people have probably not seen this film about cards, debt and crime.

We can talk about Lok, Stop or Shout for a long time, but it is better to see it once than hear it a hundred times. That's what we're offering you!
