England - Germany, Euro 2020 match preview and prediction

Two football giants face off in the quarter-finals, Germany and England. With a long history of matches between them and some of the strongest sides in European football, this is a match that will attract the whole footballing world to the screens, so we recommend that you keep Tuesday night free for this spectacle of football. We'll take a look at both teams and, as usual, we'll share our predictions for the match to make it more interesting to watch, so read on.
England Sterling

England

The English will be playing at home at Wembley Stadium to avenge the humiliation suffered by the German team in the 2010 World Cup semi-finals, when the Germans defeated England 4-1. The English are doing quite well at Euro 2020 - they and Italy are the only teams in the group stage without conceding a single goal. However, as far as the English are concerned, although they have not conceded a single goal in the group stage, they have only managed to score 2 goals themselves.

Raheem Sterling scored the only goal against the Czech Republic and the same Raheem Sterling who led England to a 1-0 win in the opening game against Croatia. Against the Scots, the English were unable to win and the match ended 0-0, so the 7 points in the group were enough for England to qualify for the next round in first position.

The English will go into the match against Germany having not lost in 9 consecutive matches, with the last English goal coming against Poland in March. It will be interesting to see what tactical scheme the English will adopt. In this tournament, it has mainly been a 4-2-3-1, although according to many experts, the English team has looked best when playing with three defenders. If the English team were to win in normal time, it would be the first time in the history of English football that a team has won a European Championship play-off in normal time.

Germany

Germany

Germany survived in a group of "death squads" against European champions Portugal, world champions France and Hungary, who also played well. The Germans came close to missing out on the play-offs in the event of a defeat against the Hungarians, but Goretzka's 84th minute goal and a draw allowed the Germans to finish second in the group with 4 points.

Germany's play in the group stage was like a roller coaster ride, with a rather lacklustre opening game against the French, followed by a great game and a convincing 4:2 victory over Portugal. In the deciding match, which was expected to be an easy victory for the German team against the Hungarians, the Germans had to fight back and were only saved at the very end of the match. Although Germany is no longer the dominant team it was 7 years ago in Brazil, historically, European championships have been successful for the Germans: in the last 3 European championships, the German national team has managed to reach the semi-finals.

In order to win against a strong England team in their own arena, the German team will not be able to make the kind of gross mistakes we saw against Hungary. We can hardly expect the Germans to create as many chances as they did against the Portuguese, so it will all depend on how well they take them and how well they defend themselves, because the Germans have not shown any stability in defence in this championship either, conceding an average of more than 2 goals per game.

Predicted starting line-ups:

England:
Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Phillips; Foden, Grealish, Sterling; Kane;

Germany:
Neuer; Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger; Kimmich, Kroos, Goretzka, Gosens; Havertz, Muller; Gnabry.

Forecast

The bookmakers consider England to be a slight favourite in this match. It is a fact that the English have a slight advantage when playing at Wembley Station, but in the overall picture these teams are fairly evenly matched. However, the German team is much more experienced and for many of its players this could be their last chance to play for the national team, and we should see the Germans at their best and at the top of their game here. It should be a tough match, but a bet on Germany is worth more than a bet on England.
