Number of Players

“Donkey” is usually played by 2 to 9 players.

Materials Needed for the Game

The game is played with a full deck of cards. Depending on the number of players, you need to choose the same number of a certain type of card.

For example, if playing with two people – take aces and kings, if three – aces, kings, and jacks, if four – aces, kings, jacks, and queens, and so on.

Objective of the Game

To collect 4 cards of the same type (all kings, queens, jacks, or others) and not be the first to become the “Donkey”.

In this video, we can see the same game but instead of placing a hand, a spoon is taken.

Game Progress

A total of six rounds are played (the word “Donkey” consists of exactly 6 letters). Players sit comfortably in a circle, the cards are carefully shuffled and dealt to each player.

Players must secretly decide which type of cards they want to collect. The choice should be based on the type of cards you receive the most. If it happens that all the received cards are different, you need to try your luck and guess which type of cards to collect, hoping that the opponent will not choose the same cards.

The first player selects the least needed card and, turning it face down, passes it to the player on the left.

The game friend takes the card, checks if it suits them, and if so, keeps it and passes a selected face-down card from their pile to the next player. If the card does not suit, the same face-down card can be passed to another player.

This continues in a circle until one of the players collects all 4 cards. The winner, having collected the same cards, places their palm or fist with a raised thumb in the center of the circle, and the other players who notice this must also repeat the action. The last player to place their fist or palm on the table remains the “Donkey”.

Usually, the loser of the round receives only the first letter of this word “D”. The game is lost by the one who first collects the word “Donkey”. The main word of the game can be changed to another, especially if children are playing – most often “Piglet” is chosen.

How to Win?

The main trick to help win is a very quick reaction. Although the game is easy and fun, sometimes injuries occur if players have very long nails.

Who Won?

The winner is the player who does not become the “Donkey” and collects the fewest letters of this word. Traditionally, the losing player crawls under the table and must repeat the sound made by a donkey “Y-a, Y-a, Ya” three times.
