Differences between European, American and French roulette

Many casino home visitors choose to play roulette without thinking about the possible differences. In fact, there are three different types of roulette - European, American and French. The roulette mechanism itself differs in only two aspects, so what are the differences between roulettes:

  1. The numbers are arranged in a different order
  2. American Roulette has 0 and 00.

The first difference in roulette is, of course, the design, as it is in no way does not affect probabilities, but the second one increases the home advantage and the player's chances of losing his bet quite significantly. French roulette differs in both its design and its rules, but we will discuss it at length later.

American Roulette Differences and Home Advantage

The main difference between American roulette and European (and French) roulette is the inclusion of a double zero in the wheel, which doesn't count as red/black or even/odd and so on. At first glance, it may seem that just one extra box will not make much difference to a player's or a house's chances of winning, but in fact the presence of a double zero almost doubles the house's advantage.

A bet placed on a specific number in European Roulette has a probability of 2.7% (1 in 37) and gives a payout of 35 times the original bet. Making the same bet on American roulette has a 2.6% probability of winning and the same payout. This difference does not seem significant until we do more extensive calculations.

Building Allowance E. probability A. probability Advantage
Colour 1:1 48.65% 47.37% 2,7% vs 5,26%
(In)even 1:1 48.65% 47.37% 2,7% vs 5,26%
Low/Auxiliary 1:1 48.65% 47.37% 2,7% vs 5,26%

All bets American Roulette the home advantage is almost double. In practice, this means that you can win money almost twice as fast - if you could win €1,000 on European roulette in an hour, then mathematically speaking you could win the same amount of money on American roulette in half an hour.

French roulette and its rules

This roulette uses the same structure as European roulette, but has two additional rules that give the player an advantage:

  1. La Partage means "the division". If the ball hits zero, then all even bets (colour, odd or even number, low or high number) are split in half. Half of the bet is returned to the player and the other half goes to the house. For all other bets (on an exact number, etc.) the standard rules apply.
  2. En Prison means "prison". If the ball hits zero, then all even bets are marked. If they win on the next spin, the player recovers the full bet amount. If the En Prison rule is in effect, the marked bet cannot be changed.

In French roulette, one of these two rules applies, but La Partage is the most common. In the case of either rule, the home advantage is slightly reduced. In all cases except for the dropping of a zero, the house advantage is 2.7%, and if a 0 is dropped and one of the rules is applied, the house advantage is reduced to 1.35%.
