Pre-flop action: min-raise

1.Min-raise

Once you reach the middle stage of the tournament, you want to win blinds without any resistance. One of the main ways to increase your chip stack is to win blinds. A minimum raise, or Min-raise, where you raise your pre-flop bets to two blinds, can win you the pot without resistance.

Example:

You have Q♠-10♠ in middle position. You have 22,000 chips and the blinds are 400-800. Everyone folds to you, what do you do?

If you call, you will invite other players to come into the pot and see the flop. Also, if someone raises after your call, you should really think seriously about folding, because if someone raises three times from the big blind, it will cost you more than 10% of your chips in a medium hand.

With a Min-raise, you hope that 1600 chips will make your opponents think twice about going into the pot. They may think you have an ace, a pocket pair or even a very strong hand. Another advantage of a min-raise is that it can protect you from a larger investment. A player who was planning to raise may be a little scared of your raise and only respond to your min-raise.

Do not do this when a player has already entered the pot. Min-raise will not work on this player. Also, do not do this from the big blind when there are already several callers. One of the worst things you can do in the big blind is to get beat again with a min-raise. Even if you have aces, a min-raise from this position won't make any of your opponents fold.

Tip: Play more pots early in the tournament

One way to increase your chip stack is to play more hands and see more flops early in the tournament. Because the blinds are so small, you can gamble with a wider range of hands. If you make a strong hand, you can win big pots against your opponents who play more predictably.

As an example, let's say the blinds are 25-50, you have 7♣-5♣ in the dealer's position, and you call a raise. The flop comes A♠-7♥-5♦. If your opponent has AK, you have a good chance of winning a big pot. When the blinds are very small compared to the amount of chips you have, don't be afraid to gamble with these slightly weaker starting hands, remember, you are taking a small risk and the payout can be very large.
