Thailand and WPT partnership draws global poker attention

The Thai government and the World Poker Tour (WPT) have agreed to collaborate. The first Texas Hold'em tournament in Thailand will take place soon. Negotiations are still ongoing at the national level to standardize gambling rules, but this plan is a significant step towards popularizing poker in the country.

The agreement was confirmed by the head of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Sorawong Tienthong. The agreement also involves the Thailand RF Tourism and Sports Competition Club Co. Ltd. The agreement clearly indicates that the country wants to host larger events.

WPT Prime Thailand: More Than a One-Time Event

WPT stated that the event is not meant to be a standalone tournament. Thailand wants to become a “mind sports” hub, and WPT Prime Thailand is just part of this plan. Poker games will be held at set times throughout the year. Initially, one event per season will be held, but the number could increase to three or four.

This new development could allow for the opening of casinos in the future, considering Thailand's larger plan to update gambling laws.

Despite Rapid Expansion, Casino Legalization Still Unclear

More and more people are playing poker, but gambling rules are still difficult to understand. The government has not yet discussed the plan for a casino and entertainment center. The next parliamentary session, which will take place on July 2, may raise this issue again.

The government still has several issues to resolve. The Bhunjaithai party opposes the casino construction plans. The party's supporters hope that Chaichanok Chidchob's opinion does not reflect the views of the majority of party members.

Tourism and Faster Economic Growth Expected

WPT's Vice President of Tours and Business Development, Keta Ozolina, stated that “Texas Hold'em” is known worldwide, so it can attract visitors from other places. Ozolina said: “Thailand is a great place for the World Poker Tour.” He also stated that this game has helped business in other locations.

Thai analysts say the agreement will be most beneficial if the rules are wisely changed and the tax system becomes more competitive. People prefer to play in safe and legal places rather than those that break the law.

More and more countries in the region, including Thailand, are moving towards regulated gambling. Thailand's gambling laws should be changed, as Singapore and Macau already have successful gambling businesses.

When the Thai government recognized “Texas Hold'em” as a real sport, this decision was a big step in the right direction. An interagency task force was also formed to ensure that the event is well-organized and runs smoothly.

Under the agreement, WPT will share its global knowledge by building facilities and training Thai players. New laws will allow people to play poker in Thailand in the future.
