Relax: gambling films for a quiet evening (Part IV)

California Split

Poker today is not the reality it used to be. Well, or at least the way the cinema presents it.

A computer, an extra monitor and hours spent at home or anywhere else are the order of the day. Poker is played much less frequently in real life, but in the past it was not even possible to play it otherwise.

So PokerioMokykla.com offers you a break and a glimpse into the somewhat idealised, high-society and crime-ridden face of poker. Serious uncles at the tables, pulling cigars and drinking whiskey and holding a gun.

"PokerSchool.com provides you with a list of recommended films to watch that are in some way related to poker, betting or casinos.

Here is the fourth instalment of our poker and other gambling-related film offers.

Part I-a

Part II-a

Part III

The Grand (2007)

IMDb rating: 6.0

A poker film about poker. A true entertainment cinema with poker and poker at its epicentre. It is not surprising that this film, too, is set in a Las Vegas gambling house, where you can see everything.

This comedy is unique in that the script is only 30 pages long. This may seem to mean nothing, but in fact it meant that the actors had to improvise a lot.

"The Grand should catch the eye of every comedy lover with its trailer alone, as it is a light, fun film for a quiet evening.

Atlantic City (1980)

IMDb rating: 7.4

This film is not about gambling, but about love and crime. It's a true classic - there's a reason why Atlantic City was nominated for five Golden Globes.

As the title suggests, the film is set in crime-ridden Atlantic City, where Lou, a former gangster, gets his hands on drugs to sell and meets a casino waitress who dreams of becoming a blackjack croupier. Things take a turn for the worse when the man who stole the cocaine is murdered and Lou has to deal with gangsters looking to see whose hands their drugs have fallen into.

Bookies (2003)

IMDb rating: 6.0

Sports betting, four students and an insatiable appetite for money. Well, where there's money, there's problems. The unsurprising scenario is suitable for a light entertainment - this film will not require much concentration and will not raise existential questions in your mind.

It is a standard American entertainment film, which should not be taken lightly, but it is a good choice when you want a comedy.

The Gambler (2013)

IMDb rating: 7.3

A Lithuanian film about betting, where gambling is intertwined with a profession and people's lives. Vincent is a paramedic who can't stop betting and ends up in debt. But despite all this, he takes gambling one step further and starts betting on people's lives with his colleagues.

That alone should encourage you to watch this highly acclaimed and well-received film. "The Gambler is not only a Lithuanian film, but also a foreign film that has been screened at numerous festivals. The exceptionally dark plot makes this film an exceptional piece of Lithuanian cinema, worthy of everyone's attention, especially those who need a reflection on betting.

California Split (1974)

IMDb rating: 7.3

Another classic of poker cinema. Although old, this film should catch the eye of every poker lover.

Two men form a friendship through gambling. The friendship develops and they both get pissed. Specifically, one tries to become more like the other, which results in a changed lifestyle and mounting debts. As the debts have to be repaid, the action revolves around a high-stakes poker game, the aim of which is not only to win a large sum of money, but also to get the gamblers the necessary dose of excitement.
