Playing style

Playing style

You've probably heard the term style in poker. Style is based on the idea that what works for one player may not work at all for another. There are many ways of playing that work for others but not for you. It is likely that you simply attribute this difference to your style.

That's it - style is a myth.

Style is just an excuse people use to avoid adding new playing tools to their repertoire. A poker player might say: "Oh, that's not my style. Maybe it works for him, but it certainly doesn't work for me." Let me stress that you are not lying when you say that a different game structure requires a different game. But what we are discussing here is your ability to differentiate your game without even trying it.

What happens if you just call with AA on a 3-bet instead of a 4-bet? What happens if you start minraising everything preflop instead of calling? Or limp into all the pots? What happens if you start overbetting every river 1.5 times for value? What happens if you start 4-betting your opponents' minimum 3-bets? If you don't know, admit it to yourself. Try it! Experiment! Style is nothing. Experimentation is everything.

Dare to dispel the fog of your mind! This is the essence of creativity in poker. The best poker players I've met are the ones who are not afraid to take big risks. They are the ones who are suspicious of every mental belief they form until that belief proves itself worthy of being in their mind. They are relentlessly curious and self-transcending.

Yes, they do stupid things, and often. But through constant risk-taking and innovation, they find what works, while not accepting everything "for cash" until they've seen it for themselves. They are not impressed by poker dogma. They don't care that "they should have gone bankrupt here" or that "the hand is uncallable". The best players are the ones who deal with non-callable and non-falsifiable hands, not because they know they are right, but because they want to know if they are right.

And yes! To be such a player, you sometimes have to sacrifice some of your EV. You have to learn to accept that sometimes you will do terrible things and lose huge pots. You will be insecure. You will find yourself in a realm of fear and uncertainty. But it's all about getting over that fear, about getting through all that darkness, about understanding how poker really works. That's when you get in touch with the real structure of poker through creativity and risk-taking.
