France - Switzerland, Euro 2020 preview and prediction

The 2018 World Champions France will face Switzerland in the Euro 2020 semi-finals. The French advanced to this round from first place in the group, while the Swiss team finished 3rd in Group A behind Italy and Wales. We'll take a look at both teams and, as usual, share our match predictions, so stay tuned.
France Euro 2020

France

The French team has been a mixed bag in this tournament - on the positive side, the French have scored goals in every game they have played, showed solid defending against Germany, and won with a marginal 1:0 advantage. On the other hand, the French narrowly missed out against Hungary, ending in a 1-1 draw. In the last group match against Portugal, the French conceded 2 goals and it was the first match in the group in which the defensive gaps were evident, and even though the match ended in a 2-2 draw, the team will not go into the play-offs in the best of moods.

Of course, nobody expected that in a tough Group F, any team would come out of the group with 9 points, and although the French game is not entirely convincing, the first step has been taken - the group is won. Kylian Mbappe's form is also worrying - not only has the Frenchman, who is considered one of the best players in the world, not scored a single goal in the tournament, but he has also created very few dangerous episodes in all the group matches. Probably the most dangerous Mbappé episode was against Germany, when the Frenchman showed individual skill and scored a goal, but it was disallowed because of a previous offside.

The 2-2 draw against France marked the 10th consecutive match in which the French national team has not lost an official match. In order to win against Switzerland, the French will not only have to play more confidently on both sides of the pitch, but also show individual skill, which the team has but has not yet shown.

Switzerland Euro 2020

Switzerland

The Swiss national team started Euro 2020 in a rather lacklustre fashion, with a 1-1 draw against Wales and a 0-3 defeat against Italy, but in the game that decided the team's fate, the Swiss played confidently and beat Turkey 3-1. It was the last game against the Turks that gave Swiss fans hope ahead of the French game, as the Swiss showed the character and the game they were expected to play before the start of the championship.

The Swiss team is far from being the most talented team in the championship, with a rather mediocre defence, and only in the last game against the weakest team in the group did they shine on offence. Nevertheless, this team is well coached and good team play cannot be denied.

The Swiss leader should have been X. Shaqiri, who had a pretty poor season for Liverpool, shone when he was needed most. Shaqiri scored 2 of the 3 goals against the Turks and Zuber assisted all three Swiss goals. Although the Swiss have missed the 8-final barrier 3 times in a row, the Swiss may have a chance against a France that is also not in top form. The Swiss should not be under much pressure as nobody expects anything from them, so a better start or even a goal in this match could be very interesting.

Predicted starting line-ups:

France
Lloris; Varane, Lenglet, Kimpembe; Pavard, Kante, Pogba, Hernandez; Griezmann; Mbappe, Benzema;

Switzerland
Sommer; Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Zuber; Shaqiri; Embolo, Seferovi.

Forecast

The bookmakers have the French as the clear favourites and it would be illogical to disagree. The Swiss may surprise by scoring a goal and keeping the intrigue going for a longer period of time, but sooner or later the French should take the initiative and show why they are considered the most realistic contenders to lift the Euro 2020 Champions Cup.
