Edward Gaming - Victory Five, 2021-02-02 LPL Series Review

The LPL spring season is gathering momentum: we are already seeing new emerging teams, pre-season favourites that have not found their game, and a lot of new talent emerging. Today we'll take a look at a match between two Top 8 contenders and, as always, we'll share some insights from the game and make a prediction.
Edward Gaming

Edward Gaming

Edward Gaming is one of the most well-known e-sports organisations in China for e-sports fans. The organisation, which has been around since 2013, has been nominated as the best Chinese League of Legends team at the China LoL of the Year Awards between the 2014-2017 seasons. However, after 2017, the team's results started to drop, partly due to the dismantling of the core and the recruitment of new players. It's hard to find more capable players when you have some of the strongest individual players in the entire tournament. Anyway, after a couple of down years, from 2019 onwards Edward Gaming seems to have returned to LPL elite.

Edward Gaming managed to find a talented young Jungler player in JieJie, who is looking better and more confident with each match. The team also retains veteran players Scout and Meiko, who bring experience and confidence to the team at important moments in the matches. However, key moves have been made this off-season, ahead of the start of the 2021 season, with the addition of former Griffin ADC Viper and long-time Snake, later known as Flandre, the LNG team's top laner.

The team, which has assembled a very solid line-up this season, looks impressive individually, but the team's greatest strength lies in the organisation of the game and the execution of macro plays. Macro play is the use of the map to give a smaller advantage to the opponents, while taking a larger advantage in one or another part of the map. Edward Gaming has not lost a single series this season and will no doubt do everything possible to extend their winning streak to 6.

Victory Five

Victory Five

Victory Five is one of the youngest Chinese League of Legends e-sports organisations to join the LPL tournament. The team, which only debuted in the LPL in 2018, was by far the weakest team in the league, with opponents only playing against them for the sake of it, to pick up easy points. However, the situation in the team has changed dramatically for the 2020 season with the addition of Korean ADC Samd and Support ppgod. This bottom lane tandem was the most pleasant surprise of the 2020 LPL season and Victory Five finished the Summer LPL tournament in 5th place.

The 2021 Spring LPL season started well for the team: after a disappointing first series against Team WE, wins against LGD Gaming, Bilibili Gaming and Rogue Warriors made it look like the team was in a good shape and would continue to pick up wins. However, in the very next series Victory Five faced the challenge of RNG, where they had to concede 1:2 to their opponents. If the loss to RNG is not really a tragedy considering that RNG is one of the strongest teams in the LPL, the recent 0:2 defeat against the weakest team in the LPL this season, TT Gaming, raises a lot of questions. The team looked unprepared and lost, it's hard to say if this series will trigger any changes in the team, but with such a disappointing loss against a much weaker team, some changes should be expected.

Forecast

The match between Edward Gaming (5-0) and Victory Five (3-3) should be an interesting one, as both teams like a fast-paced, often risky, High-Risk/High-Reward game. Although Victory Five has started the season well and one could say that this game should be very tough and hard to predict the winner, the recent series between the two teams shows otherwise. Edward Gaming has been sweeping all the LPL leaders one after another, while Victory Five has not only not dominated the potentially weaker teams, but has even dropped the worst of them by a dry score of 0:2. Edward Gaming should win this series with confidence, leaving no further questions.
