Dixit game

Dixit is a colourful, imaginative pastime where one picture speaks a thousand words. The illustrations are designed by the talented artist Marie Cardouat, making each card in the game like an individual work of art. Launched in 2008 in France, the game has won numerous Best Game titles in just a few years (30 awards and nominations!). Today, there are 10 different editions of the game, all of which are surprisingly artistic and enchanting, but at the same time require a bit of strategy and getting to know your playmate.

Board game Dixit - preparation

Each player chooses one hare and places it on the starting square on the game board (the sum of the square's points is 0). The dealer shuffles the 84 playing cards and deals 6 to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in a single pile within easy reach of everyone.

  • If there are 4 players, each player takes 4 voting cards (1 to 4).
  • If there are 5 players, each player takes 5 voting cards (1 to 5).
  • If there are 6 players, each player takes 4 voting cards (1 to 6).

Note! Do not show your cards to anyone!

Storyteller

One of the players is the narrator. He reviews the 6 cards in his hand. He creates a sentence about one of them and says it out loud (but does not show his card!).

A sentence can take any form - it can be one word or several, it can be just a sound or even a movement. In addition, the sentences illustrating the picture can be created or based on works of art (song or poem, film, proverb, etc.). So the board game Dixit requires a lot of creativity!

Also, it is probably interesting that the first person to come up with a sentence after looking at the card becomes the game's narrator.

Choosing a card for the narrator

Each player chooses one of the cards they have that best fits with the narrator's sentence. Players then pass these cards to the narrator in a way that the other players cannot see. The storyteller shuffles his or her card with the cards received. He then lays them out randomly face up on the table. The card on the left is the first card, the card next to it is the second card, and so on.

Finding the Storyteller card: voting

The players' objective is to find the storyteller's card among all the cards face up. Each player secretly votes for the card that they think is the Storyteller card.

Players place a voting card with the number of the card they are voting for face down in front of them. When all players have placed their voting cards, they are turned over and placed next to their corresponding cards.

Note! You cannot vote on your own card.

Game Dixit - Scoring

  • If all players have identified the storyteller's card, or if none have found it, then the storyteller gets no points and all other players get 2 points.
  • In either case, the storyteller and the players who guessed the storyteller's card each get 3 points.
  • Each player, except the narrator, receives 1 point for each voting card placed next to their card.

Players move their hares across as many spaces on the game board as they score points. The first player to score 30 points is the winner. In other rules, the winner is the player with the most points when the last card is thrown.

End of walk dixit rules

Each player adds up to 6 cards in his hand. On the next turn, the narrator is the player to the left of the current narrator (the game proceeds clockwise).

End of game

The game ends when the last card is drawn. The player with the most points wins.

Example of walking:

5 players are sitting around the table: Tomas, Laura, Marija, Mindaugas, Inga.

Tom is the first to come up with a sentence about one of the cards he has. So he starts the turn as the narrator. The sentence he tells everyone, for example, is: "7 of a kind".

The other players, having heard the sentence, must choose the card that best matches Tom's sentence.

Laura also has 6 cards in her hand and she chooses the one she thinks is closest to the sentence Tom said. Laura passes her card to the narrator of this turn, Tom, who shuffles her card with the cards he has received from the other players and places them on the table.

Each player (except the narrator) votes which card they think is Tom's. When everyone has placed their voting cards, they are turned over.

For example, only Laura recognised Tom's card, so she and Tom each get 3 points. Two players voted for Laura's card, so she gets 2 extra points. Mary also scores one point because one of the players voted for her card.

So at the end of this turn Laura scores 5 points, Tom scores 3 points and Mary scores 1 point. Mindaugas and Inga don't get any points because nobody recognised Tom's card and nobody voted for their cards.

Advice

If the storyteller describes the card too accurately, all players will guess it and the storyteller will not get points.

On the other hand, if the sentence has little connection to the card, there is a good chance that nobody will guess the card and the storyteller will not get points.

So the challenge for the storyteller is to come up with a sentence that is neither too descriptive nor too abstract, so that some of the players can guess it, but not all. It may be difficult at first, but you'll find that inspiration comes easier after a few turns.

Dixit board game - new variants every year

There are quite a few variations and different editions of Dixit to keep players from getting bored.

For example, there are versions with only 3 players. Each player has 7 cards instead of 6. Each player, except the narrator, is dealt 2 cards instead of one. So when the cards are turned over, the narrator's card must be chosen from a possible 5.

Scoring. Whenever one player guesses the storyteller's card, they both get 4 points instead of 3.

Pantomime and singing. In this option, the narrator has the option of singing a song or melody that is somehow related to the card, or acting it out in a pantomime. The other rules of the game remain the same.

Finally, you can mix and match variants or even create your own.
