Croatia - Spain, Euro 2020 preview and prediction

The Euro 2020 semi-finals will see two of football's giants face off, Croatia and Spain. The second-placed teams in Groups D and E will face each other after a break of 2.5 years, when Croatia won 3-2 in the UEFA Nations League. We'll look at both teams and give you a match prediction, so stay tuned.
Croatia

Croatia

Croatia's start to Euro 2020 was not as successful as expected, losing 1-0 to England. This defeat to the 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia means that other teams will have to be chased and victories will be necessary. The next group match was a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic, which meant that a win against Scotland was a must for the Croatian team, as a draw or a loss would not see the Croatians in the eighth-finals. Nevertheless, the Croatians won 3-1 against the Scots and showed the game that football fans have been expecting from them since the start of the tournament.

The victory over Scotland also guaranteed the Croatians second place in the group, which means that the Croatians will face the Spanish, who also finished second in their group, in the next round. Although the Croatians won the last game of the group stage confidently, there were moments of confusion and many small individual mistakes, especially in the first half. This is why it is quite difficult to see the Croatians seriously challenging for the title in this tournament at the moment.

Historically, the Croats and the Spaniards have played evenly and the games have been tough. Given that this year the Spaniards do not look as powerful as in previous years, the Croats, who have corrected the small details and are playing more confidently, may have a good chance to surprise.

Spain Pedri

Spain

The Spanish team has received a lot of criticism in this tournament for its play, wasted chances and insecurity. This criticism is justified, given that the Spaniards had only 2 points after 2 rounds. In the opening match of the championship, they played 0-0 against Sweden and 1-1 against Poland. In both games, the Spanish had a couple of almost 100% scoring chances, but both Morata and Moreno wasted them left and right.

However, in the decisive game to decide the fate of the Spaniards in the championship, the team concentrated and defeated Slovakia 5-0, advancing to the eighth round from the second place in the group. The match against the Slovaks was a breakthrough game, where chances were finally converted and the game looked much more lively, as expected before the championship. Of course, the Slovak team is certainly not the kind of opponent that would make the Spaniards favourites to win the championship again, but it is a good step forward to improve their game.

Predicted starting line-ups:

Croatia:
Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Guardiola; Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic; Vlasic, Petkovic, Rebic;

Spain:
Simon; Azpilicueta, Laporte, Torres, Alba; Pedri, Busquets, Koke; Sarabia, Morata, Moreno.

Forecast

The bookmakers consider Spain to be the clear favourite in this match. One can agree that the Spanish should be the favourites, but the Croatians are capable of putting up a fight and surprising, as they have already done several times. The Croats will not be able to play with Perisic, who is one of the team's most important players, which will significantly increase the chances of the Spanish team to win this match. If the Spaniards don't waste chances and play with confidence, we will probably see them win, but the Croats should also score a goal. Predicted result - Spain 2:1 Croatia.
