Deliberately formed false intentions

Deliberately formed false intentions in poker

One of the biggest mistakes a player can make is to create a false intention. Deliberately creating a false intention is like assuming that in the future your consciousness will catch you falling down. The whole misunderstanding starts by falsely equating oneself with one's conscious mind. Then you start thinking that you have formed a conscious intention. And when the time comes to use that intention, because you are still yourself, you resume the level of consciousness you were at when you formed the intention. To deceive yourself in this way is to misunderstand the nature of your psyche. In fact, most of our life is unconscious. In other words, we often walk around as if in a daze, without seeing the reality around us consciously.

Most people still believe that the body and mind are two separate entities. They believe that the person is the mind or soul living in and controlling the body. If this were true, then we would be in constant control and every mistake of the mind would be attributed to you as a person. But we know that it is not that simple. If you want to identify yourself as the conscious self, you have to realise that you are really just one amongst a multitude of others in the world of your mind. So, in order to see the full picture of yourself, you have to consider all the unconscious elements in your mind as part of the whole.

Have you ever told yourself that you would do something in the future and felt absolutely certain that you would do it? But when the time came, you did not lift a finger. A simple example: you were playing tilt, and you lost a lot of money, and when you counted the results of the session, you said to yourself: "The next time I'm down four buyins, I'm going to end the session immediately. No exceptions." You felt absolutely sure that you would. After all, you are the master of your own mind and you want to do it. Why should you not want to? But when that moment comes again, a week later, you're playing below four buyins.

This is what is known as a deliberately framed false objective. You assume that because your consciousness was dominant at the time, it will continue to be dominant in the future. There is no basis for this from the real ones, especially if the limbic system (the subconscious emotional schema) is tilt'ini and excited.

So how do we overcome these false intentions? The answer is very simple. You need to understand that conscious control of abilities is the exception rather than the rule, and prepare for it in advance.

This is not only true in poker. Time and time again, you will expect a lot of things from yourself, thinking you are in control. But the truth that you have learnt by now is that it is not enough to consciously decide or believe that your consciousness is strong enough. Willpower will not help either, because we are biological, neurological, electrochemical beings.
