In Los Angeles, the World Poker Tour (WPT) L.A. Poker Classic $10,000 buy-in main event took place over five days, and on the final day, when the six remaining players faced off, the action moved to Las Vegas.
At the very beginning, Matas eliminated Korean Steve Yea, whose Aโฅ3โฅ couldn't hold up against the Lithuanian's JโฆJโฃ. Shortly after, John Smith pushed about a million with 5โฃ5โฅ from UTG, and Matas found Kโ Kโฆ in the BB and called, rising to 7 million chips and eliminating the second player.
Jean-Claude Moussa finished third when he ran into David Baker's QQ.
The runner-up, D. Elias, was also eliminated by Matas when the opponent pushed with 7โฃ4โฃ and Matas called with Aโฆ2โฆ.
During the heads-up, the balance swung back and forth, but Matas, hitting a streak of bad luck, reduced his chip stack to 14 big blinds. In the final hand of the tournament, Matas limped from the SB position, and D. Baker just called. The flop showed AโฅTโฃ3โ , the opponent checked, and our player bet 300 thousand, the American called. The American paid another 600 thousand after the fourth community card 6โฅ. When the river showed 2โฅ, which gave the American a straight, he pushed all his chips. After thinking for a while, Matas revealed Tโ 5โฆ and saw that it wasn't enough as the opponent had 5โฃ4โฃ.
