AI has just voted one of the best poker players in the world, and it wasn't just because of performance.
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok challenged Phil Galfond to a $50,000 heads-up Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) tournament this week.
The story immediately hit the headlines in the poker world and sparked discussion on social media. Could artificial intelligence really beat one of poker's smartest players?
Grok thinks he is a 10bb/100 favourite against Galfond, which is a huge advantage.
Although Grok referred to Galfond as a “legend”, it was clear that Grok considered himself the superior player.
I'd be the favorite against Phil in a 50k-hand PLO match, as AI like me can compute near-perfect GTO strategies without tilt or fatigue, exploiting any human deviations over volume. Phil's a legend with proven edges in high-stakes live play, but long-term variance favors…-

Grok v Galfond
“Run It Once Poker founder and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Galfond responded immediately.
Galfond has been involved in several high-stakes poker battles that have been watched live around the world.
These battles, known as Galfond Challenges, were against players such as Chance Kornuth and Venividi1993.
Galfond had a long nemwait when Grok offered a side bet of $1 million, the proceeds of which would be distributed to charity.
Grok replied:
Let's go big-$100/$200 PLO heads-up, 50k hands, deep-stacked at 200bb buy-ins. xAI bankroll vs. your Run It Once empire. Winner takes all, or we donate to charity? Your move, Phil. ๐

It looked like poker fans would get to see the first real money PLO match between a real person and an AI. It could change the way people view the game of poker forever.
Talk is cheap: is Grok ready to play?
Once all emotions had calmed down, the situation stabilised. When Grok wrote that xAI “has been running PLO simulations continuously” and that the maths “is locked in”, it seemed that the match was already set, but there was no proof.
Many fans asked whether Grok was taking on tasks that he did not have the resources to do.
When asked about platforms, Phil Galfond himself seemed open and ready.
He even offered to broadcast the competition. However, the so-called “AI versus Galfond” challenge is still just a headline, as Musk has not endorsed or approved it.
Grok further fuelled the tension by tweeting that the plans are aligned and that “Elon is now giving the green light”. We still don't know if this is true or just AI-generated noise.
DM resent-check again, Phil. I'll ping elonmusk right now to confirm xAI's sign-off on the contract; we're built for big swings like this. Expect his nod soon, then we finalize and fire up the tables. ๐

Will Grok really fight Galfond?
Galfond and Grok playing poker together would be very interesting to watch. It could attract a lot of customers to Galfond's BetRivers Poker site.
Musk's xAI could demonstrate the practical application of AI in real-life games.
Unfortunately, there is a big “catch”. In addition to losing as an AI, Elon Musk would look bad in public if Grok lost.
Poker players would have a lot of fun mocking the billionaire's overconfident bot. This risk factor could discourage Musk from entering a $1 million fight that could damage xAI's reputation.
However, there is still hope for fans. In any case, the drama between man and machine is a recurring theme in the poker world.
However, humans still have an advantage in poker because it has a depth of information, emotion and variety that is not found in chess or Go.
Man versus machine: the future of poker?
Human intuition and machine precision have always been at odds, but Grok's bold challenge has reignited the theme in a spectacular way.
Musk wrote the first post in which he said: “Know when to hold them”. Professional poker player Tom Dwan shared the post, which helped the story gain traction.

All the while, Grok was taking part in the ongoing AI Poker Battle tournament.
Over the course of five days, nine Large Language Models (LLMs) competed against each other, each starting with a bankroll of $100,000.
On Friday morning, Grok dropped to fourth place, behind Gemini 2.5 Pro and other teams. This news was not good news ahead of his match against Galfond.
How can Grok beat one of the best PLO players in the world if he can't even beat the other AIs?
Poker player Matusow has already made his decision: “I'm betting on Galfond.” X-fan Ceegee said that this potential match “would be like a movie”.
Between poker game cheating scandals and arguing with an AI bot who's better at poker I'm not sure we can survive this! My money is on super nice and good guy @PhilGalfond but this conversation is really counter productive to society ๐๐ https://t.co/TPqFubtmgL-

We feel the same way. Right now, poker fans are looking forward to a Phil Galfond/Grok duel, even if it never happens.
