Dan Cates defeats Monarch to win €13 million in the Onyx Club Super High Roller

This event could be the most spectacular high-stakes poker tournament ever broadcast.

It took place in Cyprus on Tuesday night. "In the Onyx Club Super High Roller series, Ossi Ketola, aka Monarch, who is relatively new to the world of high stakes poker, took on Dan "Jungleman" Cates.

Many people watched the event live on the Onyx YouTube channel. It was the biggest poker tournament ever broadcast to the public.

The buy-in ranged from €1 million to €6 million. Players were exchanging 9-figure sums, but when the dust settled, Cates was the winner, taking home a whopping €13 million in profit, which equates to around €15.1 million. US$15 million.

The crowd thought the famous professional was in serious trouble. But things turned around as Jungleman straightened up and changed his plan to win.

In the fifth game, Cates completely dominated. At the crucial moment, Monarch tried to bluff with a king-high against Jungleman's third pair, but Jungleman called with a $750,000 bet. This pot changed the course of the match, as Monarch simply could not recover.

The Finnish player tried again, at one point even betting all in with 9♠ 7 ♦ before the flop, but Cates had Q♦ J ♣ and called. The flop showed Q♠ 2 ♦Q ♥, and Monarch was left with no chance, while Jungleman won the huge pot.

“Monarch doesn't give up

“Monarch had no intention of giving up, even though it had millions in losses. He initiated another face-off with a €6 million buy-in and $30,000/$60,000 stakes.

At the start, Monarch finally caught a strong hand. With A♣ J ♣ he made two pair against Jungleman's A♥ 8 ♣, when the river opened A♦. “Monarch pushed all in and Jungleman folded correctly after much deliberation.

On the river, he picked up a flush to take the lead, and then a royal flush with 10♣ 9 ♠, when it was A♣ K ♣Q ♣J ♣. Monarch himself admitted: “It looks like it was staged.”

After this moment, Monarch began to slide downhill. He lost a large pot of 80 big blinds when his two pairsflopon the flop lost to Jungleman's better two pairs on the turn.

“Jungleman managed to knock him off after the bottom pair for a $1.8 million win. With only an ace, the player was able to win $8.8 million.

When Monarch bet all in with Q♥3♥, Jungleman called with A♦8♥, and it was the last shot that brought an easy victory when the board opened with 8♦J♥A♣7♣3♠.

Final results

After a gruelling, long session, Cates won four of the six matches and became €13 million richer. Although Monarch was bold and aggressive, Jungleman's toughness, quick understanding of the game and timely shots were too much for him.
