Mistakes made while winning are usually driven by good emotions and, to a lesser extent, fear of losing the won money. Winner's tilt is caused by overconfidence, which shuts down the part of the brain responsible for thinking. Confidence is an emotion, and too much of it leads to the same mistakes as anger. However, the deep-seated cause of anger differs from the cause of overconfidence, so different strategies are needed to solve these problems.

Tilt description

Despite many similarities, each player tilts slightly differently and for different reasons. One of the best times to understand more about your tilt is right after a session during which you tilted, as everything is still fresh in your mind. Since tilting has already cost you money, the best thing you can do after the session is to take some time to reflect on the situations where you tilted. Use the following questions to help analyze and identify the specific details of your tilt.

What causes your tilt? (Bad beats, losing to a weak player, variance, etc.)

What do you say out loud to yourself or others when you tilt and when frustration arises?

How do you realize that you are tilting? What is the first thing you notice?

How does your body react to tilt? (Head heats up, body sweats, heart beats faster, fists clench, etc.)

Can you identify the moment when tilt shuts down your clear thinking?

At what point do you take action to stop tilting?

Answers to these questions and everything else that comes to mind when thinking about tilt form the starting point of your tilt description. It is impossible to control what you do not understand, so for now, the main goal is to gather knowledge about your tilt. While accuracy is very important in solving the tilt problem, any new knowledge about tilt leads to improvement, even if very small. This does not necessarily mean that you will always be able to control tilt, but increasing your knowledge base will take you a few small steps forward.

Think you don't tilt?

There are players who think they don't tilt because they stop playing before they start tilting. Does this mean they don't tilt? Technically, according to the formula presented at the beginning of the chapter, they don't tilt because they don't make tilt-induced mistakes. On the other hand, there are clearly unresolved anger-related issues that are managed by stopping the game. Often, such players develop motivation problems because they don't play enough hands and eventually forget that the reason was tilt. You could say they live in a room with an elephant so well that they eventually forget the elephant exists.

Having a tilt problem description is also important because it provides certain guidelines for assessing progress. Observing the psychological game is not the same as tracking poker statistics. Sometimes it will seem that the intensity of your anger is the same as before, but in reality, your mistakes will not be as bad as before, you will recognize tilt faster, take action against it earlier, end the session sooner, and the thoughts in your head will no longer be as negative.

For many players, a small improvement must first occur before they can fully start controlling tilt. The tilt description gives such players the opportunity to see areas where improvement has been made, which are usually hard to notice. It is very important to realize that progress is being made, otherwise, the player may abandon a strategy that is actually effective, just not as obviously as desired.

7 types of tilt

The following points briefly describe the most common types of tilt:

Bad card tilt: this is the tilt caused by long periods of bad card deals.

Injustice tilt: bad beats, coolers, and suckouts are examples of what triggers the feeling that you are cursed and think that poker is unfair.

Reluctance to lose tilt: many players dislike losing, even though they understand the significant role variance plays in the short term. The desire to win is not the problem; the problem is the inability to deal with inevitable losses.

Mistake tilt: making mistakes is frustrating for many logical reasons. These reasons are usually incorrect due to a wrong approach to learning.

Deservedness tilt: this is the classic Phil Hellmuth tilt, caused by the belief that you deserve to win for X, Y, and Z reasons. Winning is your property, and you tilt when someone undeserving takes it from you.

Revenge tilt: disrespect, constant aggression, and opponents thinking they are better than you are just a few reasons why you seek revenge at the poker table.

Desperation tilt: the desire to win back your money is so strong that it forces you to play very long sessions, speed up actions, and jump to higher limits.

The corresponding sections of this part provide more information about each type of tilt. How you choose to read this part is up to you. You can go to the section that suits you best, although I would advise reading all sections. You might recognize certain tendencies or emotion triggers in a type of tilt that you previously did not associate with your game.

General tilt strategy

This strategy is adapted to all types of tilt, and each section has a specific strategy for each type of tilt.

Recognition. Knowing the signs of your tilt while not playing is not enough. You must be able to recognize the signs during the game that indicate you are tilting or that it is about to happen; otherwise, you will not be able to control it. For some players, these signs are too weak and too subtle to stop tilting. Study your tilt description as you would study any other poker concept and develop the skill of recognition. Only when you can recognize that you are tilting while playing will you be able to control tilt.

Preparation. Every time before playing poker, review your tilt description, embedded logic, strategic reminders, and other parts of your strategy so that all of it is always in your mind. This way, you will be able to notice the early signs of tilt and take action before anger reaches an emotional breaking point and shuts down your thinking.

Make tilt control a priority. Constantly monitor the signs predicting tilt, and when you notice them, use embedded logic. Also, note the hands that caused anger or frustration. This way, you will gather more information about your tilt.

Evaluation. What you do after the session will depend on how severe your

When tilt is only mild, focus your evaluation on the improvements you have made so far. Pay attention to situations that would have tilted you before but now you manage to stay calm. Analyze what you did to successfully manage tilt. Review the 5-step protocol.

When tilt is clearly felt but you haven't completely lost your head, note important details immediately after the session. Add new information to your tilt description about what made you angry, note the mistakes made or signs that predicted tilt. Do not assume that these details are always the same – look for differences. At the very least, even if the details are the same, paying attention to them enhances your ability to recognize them. You could say you are describing the first point of the 5-step protocol, and this alone can reduce anger.
