Calculating <i>pot odds<\/i> allows a player to easily calculate the theoretical profitability of certain decisions.<\/p>\n<p>We noticed that by blindly calculating the probabilities mathematically, we often won't have a basis to respond to an opponent's bet (i.e., we will fulfill our <i>flush<\/i> and <i>straight draw<\/i> less often than the probabilities given to us).<\/p>\n<p>Responding to a bet that gives 25% <i>pot odds<\/i> with an 18% chance of completing your <i>draw<\/i> is a -EV decision.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, this would mean that we should fold many of our <i>draws<\/i> to most bets. Observing the play of good poker players, we will see that they often call both half-pot and percentage-wise larger bets when they have a <i>flush<\/i> or <i>straight<\/i> draw.<\/p>\n<p>Such decisions are allowed by a concept closely related to <i>pot odds<\/i> &#8211; <i>implied odds<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Implied odds<\/i> is a continuation of the <i>pot odds<\/i> concept, meaning the additional amount of chips a player will earn if their <i>draw<\/i> completes. For example:<\/p>\n<p>Hero: 7s6s<\/p>\n<p>Villain: Kd Qh<\/p>\n<p>Pot: 4 BB<\/p>\n<p>Flop: Kc 5d 8h<\/p>\n<p>Villain bet: 2 BB<\/p>\n<p>Hero: Call<\/p>\n<p>Turn: Kc 5d 8h 9x<\/p>\n<p>In such a situation, the opponent is likely to continue their bets when the turn card is revealed or be inclined to call a small bet when the <i>river<\/i> card is revealed. Of course, if the opponent is bluffing, they may often continue with bluffs on the <i>turn<\/i> and <i>river<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Implied odds<\/i>, although somewhat more abstract than <i>pot odds<\/i>, sometimes allow you to call certain bets knowing that if your <i>draw<\/i> completes, you will surpass the opponent and they will call (or continue) your bet.<\/p>\n<p>So, sometimes by calling bets with only a draw, we make -EV decisions (i.e., theoretically lose money). <i>Implied odds<\/i> suggest that sometimes by making -EV decisions, we can recover significantly more EV in later streets if we complete our <i>draw<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>By calling bets on the <i>flop<\/i>, we may have an additional reason for this action &#8211; the opponent's <i>turn<\/i> checking. If we call a half-pot bet on the <i>flop<\/i>, but the opponent checks the <i>turn<\/i>, we get two cards to complete our <i>draw<\/i> for the price of one bet.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we can never know in advance whether the opponent will skip a bet or not, but by observing the player's tendencies, <a href=\"https:\/\/poker.stackexchange.com\/questions\/1045\/the-right-bluff-frequency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bluff frequency\/rarity<\/a>, we can sometimes add the probability of a <i>turn<\/i> check to the additional reasons.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Implied Odds vs Pot Odds in Poker\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OdScsD2k9eQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>NOTE! <i>Implied odds<\/i> is used for good <em>draws,<\/em> often applied only to one-card draws and small\/medium-sized bets. This poker concept should not be overused, as the larger the bet we call with a <i>draw<\/i> (i.e., the larger the -EV decision we make), the more chips we need to recover if it completes.
