All rooms offer a variety of Texas Hold ‘Em game variations, but we often find only a few options for the online version of Omaha Hold`em Poker.

It is much rarer to see less common poker formats (for example, Spin n Go) offered under Omaha rules, although finding MTT and Cash game tables is usually not difficult.

Several aspects hinder the popularity of Omaha Poker online. One of the most important is probably the much greater game variation. Due to Omaha rules, the absolute value of each hand inevitably decreases, and the possibilities of draw fulfillment strengthen and increase, making it much harder to predict the strongest hand in this format.

The second important reason is complexity. Although Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha differ by only a few rules, Omaha (especially Pot Limit) will be much harder for a newcomer to understand online.

Differences Between Omaha Poker Online and Texas Hold ‘Em

Every Omaha newcomer transitioning from Texas Hold ‘Em needs to remember just a few new rules, but all of them are very important. Essentially, there are only two main differences:

Players receive 4 cards instead of 2.

The hand is formed using 2 cards in hand and 3 on the board.

As almost all Texas Hold ‘Em players know, in this format, we receive only two face-down cards, and the hand can be formed using any number of cards in hand (from 0 to 2). In Omaha, the hand can be formed only from 2 cards in hand and 3 on the table. This means there are situations in Omaha where a combination cannot be formed as it can be in Texas Hold ‘Em.

For example, if there are 4 hearts on the table, but playing Omaha, we have only 1 heart in hand, we cannot form a Flush. A Flush can only be formed when there are at least 3 cards of the same suit on the table and at least 2 cards of the same suit in hand.

Although we will discuss strategy a bit later, any somewhat skilled poker player will understand that the strength of hands in Omaha Poker, both online and offline, will differ significantly. Hands are formed by choosing from 4 cards, which means there are automatically more pairs, fulfilled draws, and all other combinations. Hands like pockets are also not of the same strength as in the Texas Hold ‘Em variant.

Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha river hand probabilities

Pot Limit Omaha Online – The Most Commonly Played Structure

Another often encountered difference when playing Omaha Poker Online is the betting structure. Although both Omaha and Texas Hold ‘Em offer several types of betting structures (No Limit, Pot Limit, Fixed Limit, and others), most players play No Limit or Pot Limit Online.

Interestingly, the most popular betting structure in Texas Hold ‘Em is No Limit online, while Omaha Hold`em Pot Limit online. Omaha Hold ‘Em Pot Limit is often abbreviated as PLO (Pot Limit Omaha). There is also a less commonly used betting structure both online and offline – Fixed Limit.

Fixed Limit play is essentially the simplest but offers much fewer opportunities in the game, as it greatly restricts any betting possibilities.

Three Betting Structures

No Limit

No Limit betting structure poker is well known to almost everyone. The main feature of this, as well as other, betting structures is the maximum bet. In No Limit poker, the maximum bet is not restricted.

Each player, at any stage when it is their turn, can push all their chips (or money) into the middle. In many other formats, the maximum bet is much more restricted. However, the minimum bet is almost the same in all structures – 1 BB.

Pot Limit

The Pot Limit structure differs significantly from No Limit. In Pot Limit games, the maximum bet is calculated based on the collected pot and other players' bets. At any stage of the game (preflop, flop, turn, river), the maximum bet is calculated as follows:

Maximum bet = (bet to call) + (pot including this street's bets)

For example:

Table blinds $2/$5, four players

Pot – $20

Player A makes a $5 bet

To calculate player B's raising possibility, they first need to call the $5 bet. Then we calculate the pot: $20 + $5 + $5 = $30. To this pot, we add the call to player A's bet ($5). Therefore, player B's maximum bet is $35.

Player C needs to call at least $35.

Indeed, both the example and the formula seem quite cumbersome, and performing these calculations in practice is not easy. Pot Limit Omaha newcomers may need to practice calculating the maximum bet. Of course, when playing Pot Limit online, such challenges will not arise, as probably all poker rooms automatically set all bet sizes. Playing online requires no calculations or head-scratching.

One of the most interesting aspects of Pot Limit is the unlimited maximum Buy In number. Unlike in No Limit poker, in this betting structure, it is not possible to overbet the pot, thus eliminating the main reason for Buy In limitation.

Fixed Limit

Fixed Limit is the least used poker betting structure. As the name of this betting structure suggests, Fixed Limit has strongly restricted bets. Typically, games in this structure are described by “Small Bet” and “Big Bet” names, for example, $4/$8.

In Fixed Limit games, bets are restricted by streets. Preflop and flop bets allow only the Small Bet, while turn and river allow only the Big Bet. Players can also raise only by these amounts. For example, if player A makes a $4 bet, player B can raise only to $8, and so on.

No Limit Omaha Poker – A Forgotten Poker Format

Probably many poker players have noticed that Texas Hold ‘Em is almost always played No Limit, while Omaha is played in Pot Limit structures. Why does no one play No Limit Omaha online? This question has certainly been asked by more than one poker player.

AAKKss odds preflop against the entire remaining range

One of the differences in Omaha poker is more cards but a more restricted hand formation. Having four cards in hand results in lower absolute hand values. For example, AAKK double suited will only be up to a 70% favorite against the range.

Many hands are much closer to 50/50 than in Texas Hold ‘Em. Also, in Omaha, it is much more important to have draws, as there are more opportunities to form them. This means that many more game decisions are concentrated on postflop, and preflop play will often be closer to a coin flip (or very clear domination in rare cases).

The unpopularity of No Limit Omaha is probably also contributed to by variance. Both No Limit Omaha and Pot Limit Omaha have significantly higher variance than Texas Hold ‘Em. Of all the betting structures, of course, all No Limit games have the highest variance, as the maximum bet is not limited.

Fixed Limit games have the lowest variance, but as mentioned earlier, this betting structure is used the least. Pot Limit online and offline is the golden mean between high and low variance.

Transition to Omaha Hold ‘Em Poker

Many poker players spend most of their time playing Texas Hold ‘Em. How best to transition from a Texas Hold ‘Em veteran to Omaha and remain a profitable player?

One of the most important principles for a beginner is to play far fewer weaker hands. Having four cards in hand allows any player to form more combinations. This means that the relative value of hands drops significantly in Omaha poker.

For example, depending on the number of players, Top Pair Top Kicker in Texas Hold ‘Em can quite often be a winning hand. Meanwhile, in Omaha Hold ‘Em poker, such hands will most often be losing. This is due to two factors:

It is much easier to form more combinations from 4 cards

Limited bets allow more players to get involved

In Omaha Hold ‘Em poker, straight/flush draws also have more value, so players will much more often get good odds to call. More people will usually participate in the flops, who again have a higher chance of forming the “nuts.”

Texas Hold ‘Em players are often advised to play much tighter in Omaha Hold ‘Em Poker online and offline. By the river, many more stronger hands will be reached. Even lower sets are not something impressive in Omaha poker.

Omaha Online Conditions and Fields

Omaha Hold ‘Em poker online is played as Pot Limit in almost all rooms. No Limit Omaha may need to be sought in little-known or illegal poker rooms. This poker format is simply too unpopular for rooms to offer it.

You will find Omaha Pot Limit offers in almost all poker rooms, but these will mostly be Cash game tables. Some rooms have offered Omaha Spin n’ Go or other formats, but unfortunately, these are also not very popular choices, so the field can be quite narrow or almost non-existent.

In practice, playing Omaha poker online means a slightly longer wait and table hunting, but this aspect also has an advantage. This version of poker is much less explored and less filled with both good and average regulars. Playing Omaha, finding fish and recreational players can be much easier than in Texas Hold ‘Em.

Omaha Poker Rules Briefly

We have already discussed the rules of Omaha Hold ‘Em poker several times, so here we will present them in a shortened and easily accessible format:

Each player receives 4 face-down cards.

A hand is formed using only 2 cards in hand and 3 on the table.

A hand cannot be formed using 1, 0, 3, or 4 cards in hand.

Pot Limit Rules

The maximum bet is limited. The maximum raise is the response to the opponent's bet + the pot formed after this response.

The preflop pot and bets are calculated based on the small and big blind + using the first rule.

The maximum buy-in number in Omaha poker is usually unlimited.

No Limit Rules

The maximum bet is not limited.

Preflop bets and the pot are determined by the small and big blind.

Omaha Poker Strategies and Their Accessibility

Accessing Omaha Poker educational material online will be much more difficult. Since it is a less popular format, there is much less strategy discussion and other material. In many cases, you will only find abstract strategy descriptions unless you are looking for a coach or expensive training. Of course, this can also be an advantage, as there is a lower percentage of regular players in this game.

Pot Limit Strategies

One of the simplest tips in Omaha Pot Limit poker is tightness. As mentioned earlier, much stronger hands are formed in Omaha poker, so dragging along with weak pairs to the river is usually not worth it.

Secondly, the betting structure in this game means that more people will participate in the pots and fewer will be folded. In Omaha poker, draw hands that can easily form strong straights and flushes are often very valuable.
