Jennifer Tilly (actress)

Who would have thought that a career as an actress would not preclude her from becoming a high-level poker player? She has won almost one million US dollars (925,000 to be precise) in official poker events during her poker career. Well, Tilly's biggest win came in a WSOP event for women in 2005. She was the best of the fairer sex and won 158,000.

The actress, who has starred in well-known films such as Monsters, Inc, Bound and Liar Liar, is still a regular at the tournaments. This year alone, she has participated in four tournaments. Unlike most other US stars, Tilly also plays poker in other countries - Australia, the Bahamas, England, France, etc.

Tilly herself says that her previous and biggest win made her determined to try again, as she is still underestimated in the poker world because she only won against women.

"In tournaments, your ability to continue playing can often be on the verge of being bought back into cash games to continue playing. I would say tournaments are more macho, more pressurising and more exciting for people," she said about her choice between tournaments and cash games.

However, she often plays cash games too.

"The variation in Cash games is insane. Losses are very painful, unlike in tournaments. In a tournament, you buy in for 5,000, play a day, three days and you can't lose any more money," said the actress.

In an interview with foreign media, she demonstrated her understanding of poker and found an explanation for how her acting skills help at the poker tables. She says that the knowledge she has gained from her acting classes helps her to empathise with the game and convince others with her actions.

"When I act convincingly, I believe in what I'm doing at that moment. For example, when I'm bluffing, I can believe in myself that I have pocket aces, so I don't show any nervous tics, I don't sweat. I can be calmer than the average player," she says, mentioning that she once sat down at a table thinking the blinds were 25/50 USD, only to find out that they were 500/1000. Even so, she still played as if she had intended to play at such an expensive table.
